General Information about The Quartz Family
The Quartz Family Crystals are renowned for their healing properties and exceptional energy output. They work alongside any other crystals and also boost their healing energies and capacities.
It’s worth noting that Quartz is the second most plentiful crystal/mineral found in Earth’s crust. However, the vast majority of it is not gem-quality. Its name originated in Eastern European countries from the word ‘quarz’ meaning ‘hard’. Indeed, Quartz is measured as a 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Very few gemstones rate higher than a 7 on the scale. Most Quartz family members present with a trigonal crystal system, however hexagonal systems have also been observed. Raw crystals tend to have six sides and terminate in a pyramid-like point.
Broadly speaking, the Quartz family occurs in two classifications: Macrocrystalline Quartz and Cryptocrystalline Quartz.
Macrocrystalline Quartz: is most often simply referred to as Quartz. It incorporates the more transparent to translucent crystals such as Amethyst, Citrine, Rose Quartz and Smokey Quartz.
Cryptocrystalline Quartz: also known as Microcrystalline Quartz, or simply as Chalcedony. It takes in the translucent to opaque crystals such as Chalcedony itself, Agate, Carnelian, Jasper, and Onyx. They form with such incredibly tiny crystals that more often than not they can’t even be seen under significant magnification. These crystals can be further divided into fibrous and grainy varieties.
