Hematite Meaning – General Information
Hematite crystals are rhombohedral, tabular, or sometimes prismatic or pyramidal; this member of the oxides group has a trigonal crystal structure. Its colour ranges from red, brown-red, grey and black, it is opaque with a metallic to dull lustre. Most commonly recognised in its polished metallic silvery grey colour. This stone is created from oxidized iron; So scratching a piece of it against a hard surface will leave a red residue. In its soft powder or sedimentary form this crystal is known as ‘red ochre’.
It is relatively dense and heavy because of its mineral makeup. The first thing you notice when picking it up is that it is heavy for its size. In fact, it has a 50% higher density than most other gemstones. It is mostly iron and oxygen and in its purest form, Hematite is 70% iron and 30% oxygen. On the Mohs hardness scale, it rates at a medium 5 to 6.5.
Hematite Meaning – History
Hematite, or Hæmatite in older texts, has its name come from the Greek word for blood. Also, with acknowledgement as a “bloodstone”, it was a useful amulet against bleeding. Native American folklore says that war paint made with Hematite will make one invincible in battle. Roman soldiers wore it for protection. Early Egyptians used it as a talisman to calm hysteria and anxiety. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Hematite jewellery was worn during mourning. With its red colouring and brittleness, it was one of the first writing tools known to man. In Ancient Rome, Hematite was popular as jewellery, accessories and also home decor. It became popular for use in jewellery again in the Victorian era. Nowadays, Hematite is used to make a fine grain called rouge, which is a compound for cutting and polishing metal.

Hematite is useful for grounding and protecting. Considered to be a symbol of life energy, Hematite allows for more confidence, willpower and boldness. Aids the absorption of iron in the small intestines and benefits all fluid functions in the body. This mineral is excellent for the kidneys, anaemia, and tissue regeneration. Because it has an overall calming effect it is helpful for insomnia and anxiety. It aids spinal alignment and fractures and also treats leg cramps. Helps you regroup after jet lag, stress, birth and anaesthesia. Do not use in cases of inflammation.
