Sodalite Meaning – General Information.

Sodalite is one of the densest of the dark blue stones. It is a chloric sodium aluminum silicate with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6 and named Sodalite for its sodium content. It is classified as a feldspathoid and is quite well-known for its rich blue colour, intermingled with white Calcite. Quality blue or blue-violet material is used in jewellery, while lesser quality material is seen in carvings and as inlay or ornamental facing stone. Sodalite commonly occurs in a massive or granular habit, although rare transparent or translucent crystals can also form. Other names for Sodalite are Blue Stone, Canadian Blue Stone, Canadian Lapis, and Glaucolite.

Sometimes mistaken for Lazurite or Lapis Lazuli. However, Sodalite is a more traditional royal blue instead of the others’ rich ultramarine colour. It rarely contains the gold-coloured flecks of Pyrite, common in Lapis. Also, unlike the even color of Lazurite, Sodalite distinctly displays white veining or mottled patches of Calcite, and sometimes with small black inclusions. Also referred to as “poor man’s Lapis” because it has similar colour and affordability.

Sodalite Meaning – History.

Sodalite was first discovered in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland. It gained importance as an ornamental stone in 1891, because of vast deposits of quality material discovered in Ontario, Canada. The most celebrated source of Sodalite is the Princess Sodalite Mine, located a little east of Bancroft, Ontario and so named in 1901 for the Princess of Wales. While attending the World’s Fair in Buffalo, New York, she received a gift of Bancroft Sodalite. Captivated by the stone, she arranged to decorate her London residence, Marlborough House. In 1906, 130 tons of Sodalite were shipped to England to decorate the Princess’ royal home. The Sodalite from the Princess Sodalite Mine varies in its intensity of blue and often surrounded by a grayish-white mineral called Nepheline; also referred to as Princess Blue, or under its old trade name, Alomite.
