Muscovite Meaning – General Information

Muscovite is a type of mica that can be colourless or grey, brown, green, yellow, or rarely violet and red, and can be transparent or translucent, with a pearly lustre. It has a monoclinic crystal system and has a varying Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4. It is easy to recognize because of its perfect cleavage that allows it to separate into thin, transparent, flexible sheets; and also found in immense sheets that are also commercially valuable. In Nellore, India, they have found sheets of Muscovite measuring some 5 metres by 3 metres.


Muscovite Meaning – History

Muscovite, while officially discovered in 1850 by J.D. Dana, in the Muscovy Province of Russia and is so named after the region. Actually, it has a history that goes all the way back to 1568. The name of Muscovite comes from Muscovy-glass, a name formerly used for its use in Russia for windows. Muscovite is in demand for the manufacture of fireproofing and insulating materials and to some extent as a lubricant. It is also an ingredient in many popular modern cosmetics adding gloss and sparkle.

The traditional industrial use for Muscovite with its high resistance to heat and also split into thin transparent sheets is for use in windows on high-temperature furnaces and ovens. Another traditional use is as an insulator in manufacturing circuit boards in the past. Also, historically used as general window glass in earlier times.

It is a great stone for earthquake-prone areas as it helps to relieve tensions inside the earth.
