Lepidolite Meaning – General Information and History.

Lepidolite started out as “Lilalite” from the Hindu word ‘lila’ meaning play or game when first discovered in 1861. In historical terms, it is a relatively new discovery. Later renamed Lepidolite from the Greek “lepidos” meaning “scale” because of its scaly appearance. Lepidolite is a lovely purplish colour type of Mica. The wrong assumption is that the lithium content causes its pink/purple hues. Instead, it is trace amounts of manganese that cause its purplish colouring.

Lepidolite is one of the major sources of the rare alkali metals rubidium and caesium, and it is rich in lithium. It may crack and break easily. It has a Mohs Hardness of 2.5 – 4 and belongs to the Monoclinic crystal system and also belongs to the group of trioctahedral micas.
