Larvikite Meaning – General Information and History.

Larvikite is crystallized Feldspar. Its name comes from the town of its original discovery, Larvik, in Norway, back in 1884. Its unique shine, known as the Schiller Effect, is due to flashes of silver and blue from within the crystal’s black mass. These shimmerings come from the presence of high amounts of calcium, potassium, and sodium. Larvikite is a black igneous rock with a Mohs Hardness factor of 6-6.5 and comes with a pearly lustre. Geologists believe it was formed over 298 million years ago.

Larvikite is the national rock of Norway and selected as a GHSR (Global Heritage Stone Resource). Its use is very common in architecture and interior design, as a facade for buildings to its use as kitchen countertops. It is useful for carving into ornaments such as paperweights, bookends, etc, as well as being popular for wire wrapping. Commercial mining of Larvikite takes place in Norway where its sold under the trade name “Blue Pearl Granite”.
