Fluorite Meaning – General Information.

Fluorite is a halide mineral occurring in hydrothermal veins. Composed of calcium fluoride, it has an isometric structure with cubic or octahedral crystals. Fluorite has lent its name to the phenomenon of fluorescence and its constitutive element fluorine. It has a Mohs hardness factor of 4. It derives its name from the Latin, meaning “to flow”. Fluorite was first referenced in 1530 when the mineral called fluorspar began its use as a flux in smelting to increase the fluidity of slag.

Its colour is extremely variable including multi-coloured, and many times can be an intense purple, blue, green or yellow; also colourless, reddish-orange, pink, white and brown. All colours have a shiny lustre. It is easy to see why Fluorite with its veritable bouquet of brilliant colours earns the reputation as “The Most Colourful Mineral in the World”. Moreover, its incredible range of colours is rivalled only by Quartz.

Fluorite is one of the most popular crystals for collectors around the world. Every collection of even the newest and youngest crystal collector must have a specimen of Fluorite. It is by far one of the most beautiful and interesting crystals available today.
