Chrysoprase Meaning – General Information
Chrysoprase is a gemstone variety of chalcedony (a cryptocrystalline form of silica) that contains small quantities of nickel. Its colour is normally apple-green to deep green and usually translucent but may become opaque in poorer samples. Unlike many non-transparent silica minerals, it is the colour of Chrysoprase that makes it desirable. It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and has a Mohs hardness factor of 7. A lemon variety of Chrysoprase is also readily available.
The name Chrysoprase comes from the Greek chrysos meaning ‘gold’ and prason, meaning ‘leek’ or ‘bloom’. The Greeks bestowed this name due to the presence of the golden drops appearing in the stone. Also referred to as Chrysophrase or Chrysoprasus.
Chrysoprase is one of the birthstones for May and by tradition symbolises enterprise, happiness, and prudence.
Chrysoprase Meaning – History
The Greeks, Romans and Egyptians used this material for signets and seals as well as jewellery during early times. Believed to have been the favourite gemstone of Alexander the Great. In the Victorian era, it was very popular and used in jewellery pieces, usually, fashioned into cabochons, beads and bangles or carved into other ornamental objects.
A small Chrysoprase bowl kept by the front entrance to the home has stood time as a very wise procedure. In ancient Greece, this magic stone was recharged out in the open, at the time of half moon. This would ensure good health and a happy marriage.

Chrysoprase is useful as a shield or protector from negative energy. It also helps to make conscious what was unconscious. Chrysoprase is excellent for relaxation and inducing peaceful sleep. It heals the inner child, releasing emotions locked in since childhood. Also reduces claustrophobia and nightmares.
It has a strong detoxifying action, that can mobilise heavy metals out of the body, and also stimulate liver function.
Use this stone to speed the healing of any wound, and to staunch the flow of blood. Useful for relieving the pain of rheumatism. It is a powerful healing stone that aids failing eyesight or other eye problems. Also, immune system response, fertility issues, gout, mental illness, relieves fevers and excess body heat. It can help guard against sexually transmitted diseases. Also, treats skin diseases, goitres and heart problems, balances the hormones and soothes the digestive system. It is preferable not to place this stone directly on the body; instead, hold it over the affected area. For acute cases use it as an elixir. An elixir can also calm stomach problems caused by stress.
