The Four Cardinal Virtues

In recent years I have found myself leaning more and more into the writings of the late Dr Wayne W Dyer. He evolved both personally and in his writing. He started as a solid and practical psychologist with his book “Your Erroneous Zones”, to become an inspiring spiritual leader. As you followed him from book to book, he softened in his attitude and manner which led him into leading and teaching about a more peaceful and meaningful life. Clearly reflected throughout his later books was a profound respect for and adoption of the writings of Lao-Tzu and especially the four cardinal virtues which he worked into his philosophy.

The Four Cardinal Virtues

‘Lao-Tzu was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is known as the reputed
author of the Tao Te Ching and the founder of philosophical Taoism, and as a deity in
religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. He lived in the early 500’s BC.’ Wikipedia.

These are well worth our attention and adoption today. Lao-Tzu in his book Tao Te Ching, says there are four cardinal virtues:

The Four Cardinal Virtues:

  1. Reverence for all of life. Including animals, plants and people. Revere, don’t judge. Find the unfolding of God and spirit in all living things.    (My take on this is to live with a deep and unconditional love for all, including yourself).
  2. Virtue of gentleness. Manifests as softness, kindness and love. Choose gentleness instead of the demands of your ego, which lead to dominating and manipulating others.
(An extension to the second virtue is the maxim – ‘When you have the choice to be right or to be kind, always pick kind.’)
  3. Simplicity. Live in the moment. Find peace in every moment. Simplify.    (The easiest way to do this is to live simply, honestly and authentically; simply put – be true to yourself.)
  4. Service. Let your ego go, your false self. Let go of how much you accomplish and accumulate. See yourself as a divine being. The rest are all details.    (This is best achieved by expressing your life as a service to others with no expectation of reward. Also by asking ‘how may I serve’.)
Wayne added some further advice:

“Never think of yourself as ordinary. You are a piece of God. You are a one-of-a-kind being, who is here at this time, this moment, on Earth. In the ancient teachings of Lao-Tzu in his book Tao Te Ching, he says there are four cardinal virtues.

Live according to these principles and discover your original nature. Live these virtues, and that’s when the doors will open.”

Become aware of and practice the four cardinal virtues, living every day as if it were the only day you have. Aligned with the truth, you can use, and live the greatest gift you have been given. You can be all you were led here for and are meant to be!
