Tiger Iron Meaning – General Information and History.

Tiger Iron is a uniquely Australian gemstone or crystal, found only in Western Australia. The best specimens come from the far west Pilbara region. It consists of narrow alternating layers or bands of Tiger Eye, Hematite, and Red Jasper. It is sourced from a 3,000-million-year-old Archaean formation in the Ord Ranges. Because of its unique colour and pattern combinations, it is one of Australia’s better-known and highly regarded semi-precious gemstones.

Nevertheless, this ancient stone only has a very short history within the gemstone, crystal, and healing fraternities. It has a Mohs hardness factor between 5.5 and 7. This varies depending on the dominant mineral, with Hematite being 5.5 to 6.5 and Red Jasper and Tiger Eye being 6.5 to 7. It has an opaque transparency and colouring of golden yellow, metallic grey, and brick red.

Tiger Iron has a wide variety of applications and is useful for carving ornamental objects, figurines, knife handles, and jewellery. In recent times, it has become popular for making furniture, bench tops, and floor tiles.
