Septarian Meaning – General Information and History.

Septarian is actually a tri-colored concretion composed of multiple minerals. Concretions are bodies of cemented sediment found in sedimentary gemstones. That is, they’re beautiful balls of hardened mud or rock. Descriptions dating from the 18th century attest that concretions are regarded as geological curiosities. The three most common colours are yellow (from calcite), brown (from aragonite), and gray (from limestone), formed into unique patterns. Septarian stones are usually spherical. It has a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4.0, a colour range of golden yellow, brown, tan, black, gray, white, and reddish. It has a trigonal crystal structure, with a dull lustre and an opaque transparency. Regularly appears with dramatic, geometric patterns and popularly used as polished display pieces (spheres, eggs, slabs).

Septarian nodules formed during Earth’s Cretaceous period, occurring anywhere between 50 and 70 million years ago! Its name ‘Septarian’ derives from the Latin septem, meaning seven, or saeptum, meaning wall or enclosure. It often forms with a distinctive seven-point pattern. According to ancient Madagascan legend, millions of years ago, when “dragons” became extinct, their remains fossilized and formed Septarian. Hence, Septarian’s resemblance to dragon scales and also being known as a “Dragon Stone”. Ancient peoples used Septarian as a talisman of courage. They also used it for grounding, as they believed its powers came from deep inside Mother Earth.
