Scolecite meaning
Scolecite Meaning – General Information and History.

Scolecite is a hydrous calcium-aluminium silicate, and it is a member of the Zeolite family. A.F. Gehlan and J.N. Fuchs first reported it in 1813 in Germany, and named it after the Greek word skolex, meaning ‘worm’. This refers to the stone’s inclination to curl when heated with a blowtorch. Scolecite occurs in abundance in large masses and also forms into slender prismatic crystals. It ranges in colour from white, yellow, pink, purple, red, and even colourless.

Scolecite ranks at 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. It belongs to the Monoclinic, Pseudotetragonal (crystals) crystal structure, with a vitreous to silky lustre, and is transparent to opaque.

Scolecite can produce a temporary electrical charge under mechanical pressure (piezoelectricity) and when heated (pyroelectricity).

In the present day, apart from being an excellent healing crystal, Scolecite is also a great jewellery and decorating accessory. It may occasionally be faceted into rectangular shapes. More often, though, it becomes cabochons, tumbled stones, or carvings, including spheres, pendulums, and towers.
