Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral that crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. It is an opaque, banded stone, the colours in the bands range from a very light green to a very deep green.

The stone derives its name from the Greek meaning, “mallow-green stone”, and was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the Mallow plant. It is also used for decorative purposes, such as the large Malachite vase featured in the Malachite Room in the Hermitage. A gift from Tsar Nicholas II and one of the largest pieces of Malachite in North America, “The Tazza”, stands as the focal point in the centre of the room of Linda Hall Library.
