Amethyst – February Birthstone

For all those born in the month of February, your Birthstone is Amethyst.

Amethyst is a variety of quartz with purple coloration which is caused by impurities of iron or manganese. It occurs in a wide range of purple shades and is found in many areas around the world. The word Amethyst comes from the Greek meaning “without drunkenness”. Ancient Greeks and Romans wore Amethyst and made drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.

Purple is recognised as the colour of royalty and has been worn by the rich and powerful as a mark of rank for hundreds of years. Even today it still has a regal air. Amethyst is also one of the stones on the breastplate of the high priest.
