Amazonite Meaning – General Information

Amazonite is also called Amazon Jade. A semi-opaque variety of microcline feldspar. Coloured green to blue-green and it is often streaked with white. Its colour was once thought to be the result of copper compounds. But more recent studies suggest that the blue-green colour is the result of small quantities of lead and water. It gets its name from the Amazon River in Brazil. But it is doubtful whether Amazonite occurs in the Amazon basin. In fact, fine-quality Amazonite has been mistaken for Jade. It is relatively soft at 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale.

 

Amazonite Meaning – History

Amazonite has a long history as a powerful healing and also as a prosperity talisman. From the earliest of times, Egyptians have used it in beading and jewellery. Furthermore, India, Egypt, Sudan, and Mesopotamia acknowledge it as a holy stone. Also, as a popular amulet against a wide range of diseases. It has also been cut into tablets. Part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was engraved on Amazonite. Also used as decorative material for building facades. An Amazonite scarab ring was among Tutankhamen’s treasures. Said to be the third stone in the breastplate of the Jewish High Priest.

In Pre-Columbian South and Central America, they also wore Amazonite jewellery. Here they used it as medicine to heal wounds and illnesses of all kinds. Rumour also has it that Amazonite adorned the shields of the formidable tribe of Amazonian female warriors said to have lived during the Bronze Age.  The conquistadors also prized it for adornment. They also valued it for carving into religious objects.
