Petalite Meaning – General Information and History

Petalite (also called Castorite) is a rare lithium aluminium phyllosilicate mineral that played a key role in the historical discovery of the element lithium. Brazilian naturalist and statesman José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva discovered petalite in Sweden in 1800. Later, in 1817, chemist Johan August Arfwedson identified lithium as the key element in Petalite. It derives its name from the Greek word petalon, which means leaf, alluding to its perfect cleavage. Belonging to the Monoclinic Crystal System, it has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. It occurs in colourless, white, grey, pink, yellow, or brown colours.

Petalite is valuable as an insoluble source of lithium and commonly used in clay bodies. Also, as an important low-iron source of lithium for ceramics, glass, and battery production. Furthermore, with its near-zero thermal expansion above 700°C, it provides these materials with high thermal shock resistance. Its first major economic application was as a raw material for CorningWare glass-ceramic cookware. Today, it is a vital component in rechargeable battery production.

Occasionally, Petalite is faceted into collector gemstones, even though its perfect cleavage makes it brittle.
