Hypersthene Meaning – General Information and History

Hypersthene derives from the Greek words hyper “above” and sthenos “strength”. It is a dark, silky-looking stone which is sometimes referred to as Velvet Labradorite. It usually has a silver, coppery, or red sheen that appears almost iridescent and is actually a form of asterism. (The optical effect of parallel inclusions reflecting a multi-rayed “star” of light on the stone’s surface). It has a hardness factor of 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure. Appears with a vitreous, silky, pearly, and sometimes metallic lustre, and is typically coloured dark brown, grey, or black.

Hypersthene is first mentioned in mineralogical literature by French mineralogist René Just Haüy in 1801, and later named “Hypersthene” in 1804. Within the spiritual community, it is nicknamed the “Golden Luck Stone” and “Stone of Magic”. Traditionally, the crystal symbolises resilience, self-love, and fulfillment. It’s also believed to be a particularly powerful protective talisman.

Some interesting folklore also surrounds Hypersthene in indigenous North American legends (particularly among the Squamish people). Hypersthene’s dark, shimmering appearance is said to have formed when lightning struck the ice or ground from the eyes or beak of the mythological Thunderbird. The sound and vibrations of the Thunderbird’s giant wings supposedly fused the elements into the stone. The Garibaldi Belt volcanic region where these stones are found was traditionally regarded as sacred ground.

Lapidaries often cut Hypersthene into cabochons and palm stones and also shape it into tumbled stones.
