Turquoise Meaning – General Information

This stone is becoming increasingly rare and costly. It is an opaque mineral consisting essentially of phosphates and has a colour range from apple-green (Chinese & African) to the popular sky blue colour (the Americas). It is one of the first gemstones to be mined and utilized in healing. Turquoise is often prized for its intense colours, which vary greatly, depending on the quantities of iron and copper that are found in it.

It has a waxy lustre and belongs to the triclinic crystal system, with a Mohs hardness of 5 – 6.

Turquoise is a complicated, pernickety gemstone. Just the right type of minerals must be in just the right place for a very long time (millions of years) before Turquoise is finally created.

Turquoise Meaning – History

The Egyptians prized Turquoise as a Life Stone. It is highly revered in Tibet where it was carried throughout one’s entire life.

Turquoise gets its name from the French, pierre turquoise, meaning “Turkish stone”, because of the trade routes between Europe and the mines in central Asia went through Turkey. Also, Venetian merchants often purchased Turquoise in Turkish bazaars.

For millennia, Turquoise traversed all cultures and prized as a symbol of wisdom and nobility. Further, as having the power of immortality. Among the Ancient Egyptians, Persians and Chinese, Incas and Aztecs of South America, and Native North Americans, Turquoise was sacred in its adornment and also for power, luck, and protection.

Turquoise beads dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in Iraq. The Egyptians were mining it in the Sinai in 3200 B.C.  Tutankhamun’s death mask was studded with Turquoise.

For nearly a thousand years, Native Americans have mined and fashioned Turquoise. They use it to guard their burial sites.
