Peridot Meaning – General Information.

Peridot is a gem variety from the Olivine mineral group, – the bottle green colour is usually called Peridot – the yellowish-green colour is usually

called Chrysolite – the olive green is usually called Olivine. Common usage usually applies all these names across the group. Always green in colour, with considerable variations, but the particular shade depends on its source. Peridot gets its characteristic green colour from iron.

Peridot belongs in the Orthorhombic crystal system and has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 – 7, and has a vitreous lustre.

It is a stone of warmth and well-being, it is also mentally stimulating and physically regenerating.

The current name Peridot derives from the Arabic word faridat, meaning “gem”.

Peridot Meaning – History.

Peridot is called Chrysolite in many ancient texts. It had a reputation for keeping evil spirits at bay. Considered sacred by early Christians, today Catholic Bishops still wear a ring of Peridot and Amethyst as a symbol of purity and morality.

Ancient peoples considered Peridot to be a ‘stone of springtime’ and also thought it was a gift from Mother Nature; as well as viewing it as a stone of lightness and beauty.

Prized since the earliest of times, and highly esteemed in jewellery.

Peridot is associated with the sun and is well known for its protective powers and for driving out the forces of darkness. It was used as a charm against evil spirits, sorcery and magic, night terrors, and madness. It overcame cowardice, calmed anger, as well as enhanced the wit.

In early Egypt, Peridot was mined for the exclusive use of the Egyptian kings. And was so closely guarded that anyone approaching without permission was threatened with death. Mined in many parts of the world today; it still remains as the National Gem of Egypt.
