Labradorite is an important plagioclase feldspar gemstone that is reputed for its capability to display a beautiful iridescent interplay of a wide variety of colours. It usually has a dark base colour with metallic-looking colour plays of blue, green, yellow, violet, orange and red. This iridescent effect is commonly known as labradorescence, so named after this stone. It is caused by the angle of light refraction dispersing into different spectral colours. It has a triclinic crystal system with Mohs hardness of six.

Labradorite was originally discovered on St. Paul Island and was named by the Moravian missionaries who were working with the Inuit natives of Labrador in 1770, which is the classic locality of this stone. Pieces of Labradorite have also been found amongst the artefacts of the Red Painted People of Maine.

Labradorite is also known as Spectrolite which is a colourless gem quality variety, darkened with needle like inclusions. It is often called Black Moonstone. Spectrolite is a dark and opalescent blue with a shimmer when the light hits it. It was discovered in Finland during WWII in 1940, and it is also known as falcon's-eye.

The natives of Labrador have used this precious stone for decoration for many centuries, calling it "firestone" or "fire rock". Mythically it was believed that the "Mighty Being" pounded on the Labradorite to make him travel up to the sky.

Another legend claims that the northern lights were trapped in the rocks along the coasts of Labrador. A wandering Eskimo warrior found these rocks and freed the lights with a mighty blow of his spear. Many of these lights are still believed to be trapped within this beautiful stone today.

The native inhabitants used it for medicinal purposes. It was believed to increase energy, and to reduce stress and anxiety. It was also said to protect its wearer from danger, and to facilitate communication with supernatural forces.

Labradorite was brought to Europe by Moravian missionaries, where it was prominently used for jewellery in England and France. It was fashioned into necklaces, wristbands, bracelets, broaches and pins. As an ornamental stone it is absolutely stunning and has many popular uses such as decorative clock faces, table and counter tops, facing for buildings, etc and is widely used for art pieces.
